We are a curatorial and design studio that, for the last 13 years, have been creating critical narrative exhibitions, aligning academic research with contemporary art, design, literature and music. The studio is known for its popular and provocative approach to exhibition experience, putting together different languages and cultural backgrounds in order to bring a diverse audience to museums.

More than 10 exhibitions, music and circus festivals, and a multi-platform project for historical communication (Rolé Carioca), brought many artists from around the world to different cultural venues and territories in the city of Rio.

With great media and audience feedback, studio M’Baraká curated and produced exhibitions at venues such as CCBB (Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil), Museum of Tomorrow, CRAB (Center for Design And Crafts Sebrae), Gallery of The National Bank of Social Development and Museu Nacional (Natural History Museum of Rio).

exposição Tropicália - Um Disco em Movimento

The exhibition was exhibited at CCBB-RJ from August to September 2017.

With the curatorship of Fred Coelho, the exhibition celebrates from the Record ““Tropicália ou Panis et Circensis”, 50 years of the musical and cultural movement that took place in Brazil at the end of the 60’s. From its emblematic cover and its lyrics, the exhibition sintetizes on sound, images and objects a perspective into a a piece marked by pop culture, the references of the Brazilian modernism, for the political radicalism and the bawdry aesthetics of the national mass products.

Tropicália – A record in movement proposes a plunge in the past as well as a reflection on the present. Although it has always been associated with innovation, musical Tropicalism has been in existence for half a century. In order to follow this period, we have chosen the manifest record “Tropicalia or Bread and Circus” (Tropicalia ou Panis et Circensis) as our compass.

Quando o Mar Virou Rio

It was inspired by the curious historical fact that the portuguese explorers had mistaken the guanabara bay with a river, naming a city that is internationally known for its beaches and bay life style, as Rio (river).

Assembled at the Historical Museum, it presents the relation of Rio's citizens with the sea. Starting at the city's "discovery",it explores the myths of the Atlantic, the portuguese navigation technologies, and the native population devastation. The narrative follows through the story of the beginning of sea baths as health treatments, also portraying the contemporary Rio, when the beach extrapolates its geographical boundaries becoming part of the city's identity.

Experiencing a diverse route of history and putting together different historical contexts and techniques, contemporary artists are exposed along with important artworks from the collection of the National Historical Museum and other public and private collections.

Liberta Dj - Funk in Rio

The Funk of Rio is the biggest mass culture movement from Brasil. “Quantitatively there isn't in the world a musical movement formed by 1.5 million young, being the majority negros, as Funk in Rio”.

Curated together with cineast and researcher Emílio Domingues, the exhibition “Liberta Dj”, narrates the history of Rio’s Funk music, one of the most legitimate cultural manifestations in contemporary Rio. On the verge of its 50th anniversary, Rio’s Funk will be revisited by it characters, its aesthetic and sonority.
