Bogotá's Museum of Moderno Art - MAMBO, is a multicultural, dynamic and innovative space located in Bogotá - Colombia, that provides a significant experience within the arts. Since 1963, the Museum has worked to research, preserve and promote the understanding of its private collection and all the manifestations of modern and contemporary art of Colombia and the world.

MAMBO is built on the conviction that art and culture play a fundamental role in the development of its country. Its space, program and activities, aim to generate art knowledge to contribute to the cultural and artistic context of Colombia.

Rivers and silences - Juan Manuel Echavarría

The exhibition Ríos y silencios (Rivers and Silences) of the renown Colombian artist, Juan Manuel Echavarría, is built on the form of a sensitive ethnography, that dislocates and puts us in the place of someone else, vanishes cultural archetypes and encourages a dialogue with the history and conflict of Colombia, its geography and its important characters.

It provokes a rupture in those who from the city ignore and overlook the reality of the Colombian territories who have lived a history of violence and war.

For more than twenty years of artistic work, Juan Manuel Echavarría and the team of the Fundación Puntos de Encuentro, have travelled to places and territories, epicentres of the rural Colombian war.

To be Known as Infinite - Maria Jose Arjona

Curators: Jennifer Burris and Claudia Segura

This mid career survey represents twenty years of Maria José Arjona’s artistic exploration, who unfolds her body of work occupying the museum in its totality. Through objects, reactivations, photographies, drawings, writings, actions and sound pieces, she situates performance in an open place, where hybrids, outcomes and tensions merge under a poetical language.

Rather than follow a chronological presentation of works, the exhibition’s five chapters take on the image of the pendulum as a way to understand the cyclical nature of Arjona’s practice. Cast into motion, this gravitational pull returns the artist’s focus to a recurrent set of questions as she moves between diverse environments, mediums, and contexts: arriving each time at a different answer, or an alternative means of expression.

The Art of Disobedience, MAMBO'S Collection 1965 - 1984

Curators: Carmen María Jaramillo, Sylvia Suárez, María Wills

The exhibition The Art of Disobedience aims to review the emergence of contemporary art in Colombia through the collection of Bogota’s Modern Art Museum, with a selection of more than a hundred works made between 1965 and 1984. This period was marked by the rupture with modernism, allowing important transformations to occur in the artistic practice and territory, expanding to consider processes and ideas as works itself.

The works in the exhibition appeal to a direct provocation to question the established order or to transgress values that did not respond to the ongoing changes in the world; through the use of dark humor and an ‘undisciplined’ attitude.

Opening the System - Homage to Carlos Rojas

Curator: María Iovino

A review of the artistic proposal of Carlos Rojas in the horizon of the present century which has cleared for scientific and technological development, shows his groundbreaking comprehension of the sacred from a holistic point of view and attention to the natural orders and behaviors. Rojas’ work, both diverse and coherent, granted importance to the line, which reflected in his pictorial expression, drawing, sculpture, collage, weaving, architecture and design.

Based on this reflections, it is considered important to gather different proposals from artists and designers (Alexandra Agudelo, Mónica De Rhodes, Andrés Ramirez Gaviria, Gabriel Gutiérrez and Mateo López), who working in different mediums and combined with the works of Rojas throughout the exhibition, will reveal the powerful synthesis of the knowledge, explorations and interests that founded Rojas’ artistic project.

Second edition of the exhibition catalogue Papel y Lápiz (Paper and Pencil), of the Colombian artist Jonier Marín. This exhibition brought together drawing from different artists, who Marín met while he was travelling, and an attached passport photograph of each artist to validate their work. This show opened simultaneously, the same day at the same time, in Bogotá and São Paulo in 1976.
