MARS 2120 is a 2.5D side-scrolling action-adventure game from the Metroidvania subgenre in which players take control of Lieutenant Anna “Thirteen” Charlotte to find out what happened to the Colony.

In the 22nd century, humanity developed the technology that made manned missions to other planets a reality. Following these developments, the UN spearheaded a treaty, signed by governors around the world, to initiate investment in building colonies on our closest planets. The treaty was a success and the program, codenamed Project: Colonies, produced inhabited colonies on several planets, the first being Project: Mars, followed by Project: Venus and Project: Jupiter.

After going unresponsive for several weeks, the First Colony sends a distress signal to the UN on Earth who, in response, send a group of enhanced elite Space Marines, won over by Lieutenant Anna "Thirteen" Charlotte.
